According to an announcement made by the
Central Government on April 10, China aims to continue keeping population
growth under control during the 12th Five-year Plan period.

During this period the average annual
population growth rate should be below 7.2‰, and the total population not
exceed 1.39 billion. In terms of population distribution, the urbanization rate
is estimated to increase by about 4 percentage points.
