Dec 26 - Steel Market Continues to Deteriorate Due to Sluggish Demand

+   According to market data, most steel traders in China are unable to maintain a balanced supply and demand, causing increased funding pressure and suppressed steel prices.
+   Market prices for hot rolled steel coil continue to fluctuate within a narrow range at a low price level.

Dec 26 - Railway Investment to Be Cut in the Coming Year

+   Sheng Guangzu, Minister of Railways, announced on December 23 that China plans to invest only CNY 400 billion in railway infrastructure construction in 2012, a significant drop from the budgeted CNY 700 billion investments in 2011.
+   Statistics from the Ministry of Railways show that from January to November, fixed asset investments totaled CNY 491.6 billion, down 28.4% year-on-year. Of this amount, CNY 396.3 billion was invested into railway infrastructures, a 34.7% year-on-year decrease.
+   The Ministry of Railway is experiencing stricter bank lending and diversification of financing  sources will be the primary goal in future reforms. All indicators point to a slow down of China’s railway construction.

Dec 22 - China Filed 391,000 Patent Applications Last Year

+    According to the World Intellectual Property Organization, 3.66 million trademark registrations were made globally in 2010, up 11.8% from 2009.
+    China filed 391,000 patent applications in 2010, more than Japan, and second only to the U.S.

Dec 22 - Over CNY 200 Billion Invested In New Projects in Western China

+    The National Development and Reform Commission has announced that in 2011 a total of CNY 207.9 billion was invested in the development of 22 new key projects in the Western regions.
+    165 major projects have been developed since 2000 with total investments amounting to CNY 3.1 trillion.
+    Benefiting from a series of financial, industrial, and economic policies, the annual GDP growth in Western China averaged 11.9% between 2000 and 2009. This is higher than the national growth rate during the same period.

Dec 22 - Ping An Insurance Plans to Issue Bonds Worth CNY 26 Billion

+ On December 20, Ping An Insurance (Group) Co. of China Ltd. (SSE: 601318, HK: 2318) received approval from its board members to issue a maximum of CNY 26 billion worth of A-share convertible bonds.
+ As of October 31, 2011, the solvency ratio of Ping An was 170.7%. Should all of the new bonds be converted into shares, the ratio will increase to 194.9%, reaching CNY 208.9 billion.

Dec 21 - Strong Growth in Western and Middle Regions Might Push Eastern Regions out of Top-10 Rank

+   As the year is coming to an end, the GDP data of different regions are being publicized, showing strong growth numbers in the Western and Middle regions. It is likely that Chengdu and Wuhan will be among the top 10 cities measured by GDP, while Hangzhou and Qingdao may fall out of the top 10 rank.
+   In the first half of this year, Wuhan and Chengdu ranked the 9th and 11th with regional GDP of CNY 322.16 billion and CNY 310.76 billion respectively. In addition, Chengdu recorded highest national GDP growth with 17.8%.
+   In 2010, the top 10 cities measured by GDP were Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Tianjin, Suzhou, Chongqing, Hangzhou, Wuxi and Qingdao, among which only Chongqing is in the western region. Wuhan and Chengdu ranked 12th and 13th respectively.

Dec 20 - 21% Average Annual Growth of Logistics Sector

+   During the 11th five-year plan (2005-2010), the average annual growth of China’s logistics sector was 21%, while the value added for the sector averaged 16.7%.
+   In 2010, the top 50 logistics enterprises made a total of RMB 592.7 billion of core-business revenue, a 31.5% year-on-year increase.
+   China Ocean Shipping (Group) Co, the most profitable of the logistics enterprises, has made more than RMB 100 billion of core-business revenue.
